Third Monday in January known as Blue Monday, saddest day of the year – CBS Philly
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The third Monday in January is known as Blue Monday, supposedly the saddest day of the year. This is when the winter blues tend to kick in.
It’s a dreary Monday in Philadelphia, gray and cold, as we enter the third year of the coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s that time of year when there’s so much going on,” said Dr George James.
The third Monday in January is known as Blue Monday. The holiday cheer is over and the credit card bills are rolling in, as people try to stick to their New Year’s resolutions.
Adding to the gloom, the Eagles’ season ended with a disappointing loss.
The winter blues are real. Seasonal affective disorder can increase depression when people don’t get enough sunlight.
There are still 133 days until Memorial Day.
“We don’t realize how much sunlight can actually impact our mood,” James said.
James is with the Relationship Council. He says getting outside, being exposed to the sun, and exercising can dramatically improve your emotional outlook.

“So when we change those things, we can actually raise our mood not only emotionally but also internally, chemically, we can see changes in our dopamine levels,” James said.
These feel-good brain chemicals are boosted by getting enough sleep and healthy eating.
“Connect with family, connect with friends, play games, do fun things that might make you feel like you’re in a better place,” Dr. James said.
Paul Loscalzo, a freshman at Drexel University, says you have to “find something you like.”
Loscalzo found happiness in visiting his sister.
“I have to go out and make the best of any situation and do whatever makes you happy,” Loscalzo said.
It may not be so easy for everyone, doctors say an increasing number of people need professional help and it can be hard to come by due to the growing demand.
