The past few days have not been kind to Joe Girardi and the Philadelphia Phillies. After pushing Zach Eflin’s departure from Friday to Saturday due to load management, the Phillies faltered in their opener against the New York Mets on Friday as Bailey Falter was upstaged in a loss of 8-6. a day and a Michael Barkann later, Zach Eflin finally made his scheduled departure, allowing seven runs over six innings as the Mets raced to an 8-2 win over the Phillies.

Philadelphia (21-26) has now won just three of its last 10 games while being outscored 37-50 in those contests. With defensive blunders, base running errors and an abundance of poor pitching, there’s not much to be hopeful about right now. Although Sunday’s game is Philadelphia’s second straight national broadcastthere is reason to hope that the team will be able to turn the wheels…

The pitch game

Zack Wheeler (3-3, 3.38 ERA) vs. Chris Bassitt (4-2, 3.91)

The Phillies ace has been a much-needed beacon of hope in the Phillies’ recent departures. Wheeler is coming off a 10 strikeout performance against the Atlanta Braves on Monday, allowing two runs with zero walks in 6.2 innings of work. On Sunday, Wheeler will look to close out a May in which he boasts a 1.69 ERA with 33 strikeouts and just two walks in four starts.

In stark contrast to Wheeler, the Mets’ offseason acquisition Chris Bassitt is the opposite. Overall, Bassitt had a good season for the Mets, but was beaten in back-to-back outings against the Saint Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants. On Tuesday, Bassitt allowed eight runs in 4.1 innings of work, avoiding the decision in a 13-12 loss to the Mets. On May 8, in the second half of their doubleheader, Bassitt pitched 5.2 innings against the Phillies, allowing just one run on a Jean Segura solo homer as the Phillies lost 6-1.

One game of note heading into Sunday: Nick Castellanos currently has a career batting average of .412 with one home run and two RBIs against Bassitt. If the Phillies want to stop their current slide, Castellanos’ bat will be key to doing so on Sunday Night Baseball.
