Pennsylvania woman sentenced to prison pulled knife and stabbed herself: judge
EASTON, Pa .– A judge said a woman said she violated her bail conditions and would be sent to jail, pulled out a hidden knife and stabbed herself last week in her ward hearing in eastern Pennsylvania.
Northampton County District Judge Robert Hawke said Easton’s wife, 59, was conscious and alert as she was taken to Lehigh Valley-Cedar Crest Hospital after the events of Thursday. Authorities said she should recover.
Authorities said the accused was in court on aggravated vehicle assault charges while under the influence of an October 27 crash in Lehigh Township that injured two of his passengers .
Her lawyer waived her right to a preliminary hearing, but the judge increased her bond after pretrial services claimed she had breached the terms of the bond. He said he left the bench to fill out the paperwork when she pulled the gun out of her bra and stabbed herself twice under the rib cage.
“She was leaning over when I stepped out of the door,” Hawke said. “I heard a commotion. Then I saw her on the ground with the two Pennsylvania state agents.
Hawke said there had been no warning and the woman’s actions had been “a shock.”
County sheriffs will guard her while she recovers, he said, adding that at some point she would be sent to the county jail.
District Attorney Terry Houck said authorities are investigating and determining whether charges of bringing a weapon into the courtroom are warranted.
A message requesting comment was left with counsel for the accused on Sunday.
